411@NH Weekend Update: May 10, 2013

Hello New House,

Happy Friday! Just a few more days until classes officially end (6 if you’re counting!) and a full weekend is ahead of us. A housemaster brunch, benefit concert and series of dance performances are among some of the highlights of the upcoming days, so make sure that you take advantage of your time and enjoy the last full weekend before cramming for exams begins.

MIT/New House News And Updates:

  • There have been changes to the Final Exams schedule- take a look at them here. For the full list of exam times and locations, check out the Registrar’s Office page here
  • Keep an eye out for updates on New House end-of-year events coming from our Social Chairs next week!
  • Reminder:  Academic Year Housing for all non-graduating undergraduate students ends on May 25th and summer housing begins on May 30th; graduating seniors are allowed to stay until June 8th. If you have any questions on deadlines or procedures, check out the Housing Office website here

What’s Happening at MIT This Weekend?

  • Looking for a good movie to watch this weekend? Pitch Perfect is the latest LSC selection! Catch screenings Friday and Saturday night at 7 and 10 PM in 26-100; tickets are $4. 
  • MIT’s DanceTroupe Presents: #DTMF is happening this weekend; check out dance pieces showing contemporary, hip hop, breakdancing and tap styles on Friday (7-9 PM), Saturday (2-4 PM) or Sunday (2-4 PM) in Little Kresge Theater (W16). Tickets are $10 at the door.
  • WMBR is sponsoring a Benefit Concert in memory of Officer Sean Collier on Saturday night in the Coffeehouse Lounge (W20)- $8 donation requested at the door (all proceeds will go to the Jimmy Fund in Officer Collier’s name).  Doors open at 8:30 PM.
  • The MIT Museum’s 2nd Fridays program continues this month with D-Lab’s Project Showcase- go check out presentations on projects from D-Lab classes on design, dissemination, energy, health, education, biodiversity and supply chains for free! Presentations start at 5:30 PM and the showcase starts at 6:30. 
  • Check out Christians on Campus’ Free Spring BBQ from 6:00-7:30 PM- all are welcome regardless of faith.

411@NH Weekend Update: March 15, 2013

Congrats on making it through another week- just 7 more days until Spring Break (although it may feel like more)! Just in case you decide to take a break between studying for the exams you have next week and finishing up P-Sets this weekend (which you definitely should- research has shown it’s better for productivity), here are some updates on what’s happening around campus and the city at large, as well as some things to look forward to for next week!

MIT/New House Updates:

  • Come to this weekend’s Housemaster Brunch- from 12:30 to 2 PM in the Arcade! Get a chance to grab some great food and interact with our housemaster, Dr. Wesley Harris!
  • MIT’s Area Directors are sponsoring another MIT After Dark program- this time the focus is Life After College, so we’ll be playing a LIFE-SIZE, REAL LIFE VERSION of THE GAME OF LIFE! Come hang out with us in Maseeh Dining Hall from 6:30-8:30 PM next Monday (March 18)- hope to see you there!
  • Residential Life & Dining and the CDSA are sponsoring the first Alcohol Screening Day on Tuesday, March 19th from 11:30-1:30 in Maseeh Dining (Flowers Dining Room)! Come fill out a short questionnaire about your alcohol usage, talk to a health educator, and grab a FREE T-SHIRT or FREE WATER BOTTLE!
  • The Associate Advisors are still sponsoring P-Set parties on Mondays and Thursdays– stop by House 6 Lounge between 8-10 PM, work on your P-Sets and get to meet new people!
  • Going to be around this summer? New House will be closed for renovations– but if you want to live on campus and are looking for a job, Residential Life and Dining will be hiring Summer Conference Assistants- check out their website for more details: http://housing.mit.edu/summer_guest/CADeadline: MARCH 18TH.
  • Want to improve your leadership skills FOR FREE and get to meet other college students from Singapore in June? Sign up for MIT and Singapore University of Technology and Design’s LeaderShape Institute happening from June 4-9 at the Wonderland Conference Center (Sharon,MA)! The institute is designed for students who have at least one more year at MIT and have demonstrated leadership experience or potential as well as qualities of integrity, responsibility and commitment to international relations. What’s Going on at MIT This Weekend?

Friday:

  • Looking to see a comet this weekend for FREE? If you are, go to EAPS and Observe@MIT’s open observing night between 6:45-8:30 PM! (If you’re looking to catch Comet PanSTARRS get there early!) Go to Building 37, take the elevator to the 6th Floor and look for a guide to take you to the platform- dress for cold and wind.
  • Want to watch an Oscar-nominated film? Check out Beasts of the Southern Wild as part of LSC’s Spring Film Series for $4 at 7 PM and 10 PM- head to 26-100 to see the movie (also screening Saturday- same time, place and price).
  • Simmons Hall will be sponsoring a Bollywood Movie Night. The movie “3 Idiots” will be screened in the Multi-Purpose Room tonight beginning at 8 PM; the film is great but if that’s not enough you can also get to try some free masala popcorn!
  • MIT’s Symphony Orchestra has a concert on Friday evening- it’s in Kresge Auditorium at 8 PM; tickets are free in advance or $5 at the door. More details here: http://mitmta.eventbrite.com.

Saturday:

  • If  you like Friday night’s Symphony Orchestra concert, there’s another music event happening in Kresge on Saturday evening- the MIT Wind Ensemble Concert with special guest Don Byron. Get tickets here (again free before the event or $5 at the door): http://mitmta.eventbrite.com.

Sunday:

  • MIT’s Muslim Students Association will be sponsoring a study break to promote peace and tolerance- head to Lobby 10 to grab a FREE CUPCAKE with an Islamic proverb & riddle between 6 and 9 PM! Check out their website for more details about other events they offer: msa.mit.edu.
  • MIT’s Folk Dance Club is sponsoring international folk dance lessons from 8:00-11:00 PM in the Student Center (Sala de Puerto Rico/Lobdell)! A special session for beginners will be at 8 PM, with a mix of all skill levels from 9-11 PM. More information about the FDC here: http://mit.edu/fdc.

What’s Going on In Cambridge/Boston This Weekend?

  • Boston’s annual Saint Patrick’s Parade will be happening on Sunday, March 17th in South Boston- go to the Boston Globe’s website to download a free app with all of the details on Sunday’s festivities: http://bo.st/ZV4uZ4.
  • The Museum of Fine Arts is hosting a New Latin American Cinema series and will be screening several films this weekend ($7 admission to films for students- regular admission to museum required)- check out more details and purchase tickets here: http://www.mfa.org/programs/series/new-latin-american-cinema.
  • ImprovAsylum has shows with tickets still available this weekend– shows are at various times throughout the weekend and happen in the North End of Boston (approx. 15-20 minutes on the Red/Green Lines).   • The Massachusetts High School Collaborative Theater Festival will be happening Saturday between 9:30 AM and 4:00 PM at Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School- tickets are $5 for students and $10 for other adults. There will be multiple performances throughout the day- by Framingham High School (9:30 a.m.), Lawrence High School (10:30 a.m.), Norwood High School (11:30 a.m.), Wellesley High School (2:00 p.m.), and CRLS (3:00 p.m. – Woody Allen’s “Honeynoon Motel,” rated PG-13). Call (617) 349-6788 for more details!
  • Central Square Theater is presenting performances of their newest production, Operation Epsilon now through April 28th- the play is about the development of nuclear science during World War II and is affiliated with the Catalyst Collaborative here at MIT.
