411@NH Mid-Week Update: April 17, 2013

Keep Calm & Love Boston

Hello New House,

Hope everyone had a good long weekend and enjoyed all of our house’s CPW events! Even with a three-day week we have plenty ahead, and (believe it or not) we’re about a month away from the last day of classes so expect to be busy. Thanks again to all of our amazing CPW Chairs and NHX CPW Chairs Will & Kath for an amazing job!

As you’ve no doubt seen from the many e-mails, Facebook updates and Tweets coming from this direction since earlier this week, if you’re in need of anything in the aftermath of the Marathon bombings on Monday please feel free to reach out to any member of the house team. We recognize that you might be dealing with many emotions (fear, anger, anxiety, frustration, sadness, etc) or that you might not feel anything at all for a while- we’re ready and available to talk with you when you do. Make sure to reach out to your friends and neighbors as well and make sure they’re doing OK- this is a rough time for everyone but with each other’s help we will get through it.

Finally, there will be a gathering of MIT community members to honor those who were injured or killed in the attack and to provide a time to reflect, be with others and to express what you’re feeling; SMASH and other student groups will also be writing notes of support for first responders and the victims. If you’re interested, please meet us at the Kresge  Oval at 5 PM tonight.

411@NH Monday Update: March 11, 2013

Hello New House,

Hope you had a great weekend and that some of you attended some of our highlighted events! This week and next week will definitely be busy times with Spring Break coming up, exams and projects being due and many groups holding events. Remember to take some time out for yourself and to make sure you’re sleeping and eating regularly- if you feel like you need a break or things have gotten to be more than you can handle, please reach out to your GRTs, me, our housemaster Dr. Harris, or any number of resources across campus like S^3 or MIT Mental Health. We’re all here to help, whenever you need it- all you have to do is ask.

This Week @ MIT:

Come to the UROP Panel & Networking Social, sponsored by MIT’s RBA residences (New House, Next House, Maseeh Hall and McCormick Hall) on Thursday from 3:30 PM-5:30 PM in the Bush Room (Lobby 10, Room 105)!  You can come at 3:30 PM or at 4:30 PM and sit in on a student panel where you’ll hear what students have done previously and then get a chance to network with others who are looking and learn about potential opportunities for this summer and beyond. E-mail me at reedjm@mit.edu if you want more details.
  • If you’re interested in graduate school or in becoming a professor, there will be a panel on the subject on Tuesday, March 12th in the BSU Lounge at 6:30 PM.
  • GlobeMed @ MIT is sponsoring a talk on Monitoring and Evaluation in Global Health by Dr. Lisa Hirschhorn- it’s on Wednesday, March 13th at 7 PM in 6-120.
  • Simmons Hall will be sponsoring a Bollywood Movie Night. The movie “3 Idiots” will be screened in the Multi-Purpose Room on Friday night beginning at 8 PM; the film is great but if that’s not enough you can also get to try some free masala popcorn!
